Teaching Philosophy
Music to me is a touchstone for human flourishing and life in all its fullness. The communicative and healing power of music has significantly enriched my being with thrills of joy, marvels at beauty, and instinctive gratification for the gift of musical creation we have. As a performer-pedagogue, my primary goal with teaching is to nurture the individual artistic voice of each student. I believe that a healthy, comprehensive approach to piano education is key to guiding aspiring pianists and future educators toward artistic excellence, self-efficacy, and well-rounded musicianship. The role of a teacher extends beyond the technical aspects of playing an instrument; it involves inspiring and guiding students to become well-rounded musicians, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners.
Tailoring Instruction to Individual Needs
Central to my teaching philosophy is the recognition that every student is unique, possessing distinct strengths, challenges, and musical aspirations. I am dedicated to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel encouraged to express themselves authentically through their music. By tailoring my instruction to the individual needs of each student, I strive to foster a deep connection between the student and their instrument, unlocking their full potential.
Holistic Musicianship
I believe in cultivating holistic musicianship that goes beyond the notes on the page. In addition to technical proficiency, my teaching emphasizes musical expression, historical context, and theoretical understanding. Through a comprehensive approach, students will develop a well-rounded musical foundation that equips them for a diverse and dynamic career in the ever-evolving landscape of classical music.
Encouraging Critical Thinking and Artistic Independence
I see my role as a guide, empowering students to think critically, make informed musical choices, and develop a strong sense of artistic independence. By encouraging students to explore diverse musical styles, engage in collaborative projects, and participate in performances, I aim to instill confidence and a deep sense of musical identity in each student.
Obtaining Present-day Artistic Perspective Within Modern Social and Cultural Contexts
Art is a response and communication of humanity to me, and it influences society by changing opinions, instilling values, and translating experiences across time and space. Hence, cultivating adaptability and fluency with ongoing global and contemporary trends is vital to me, and expressions through musical art, in turn, should not be overlooked or discriminated against. Although I perform and teach all styles and periods of music, being involved with contemporary music—the music of our time—is essential. Similarly, my students also strive to increase the inclusion of marginalized or underrepresented voices, by featuring in their recital programs at least one work written by a diverse ethnic or cultural heritage or composed after the 1950s. I aim to respond effectively to changing social and cultural dynamics and create platforms for these pieces to be heard both inside and outside traditional settings.
Fostering a Lifelong Love for Music
Ultimately, my goal is to instill in my students a lifelong love for music and a passion for continuous learning. I strive to create an environment where curiosity is nurtured, and students are inspired to explore beyond the confines of the practice room. Through mentorship and guidance, I aim to equip students not only with the skills necessary for a successful career in music but also with a genuine and enduring love for the art form.
